The Institute of Sport, Exercise and Health’s (ISEH) Dr Amal Hassan, Consultant in Musculoskeletal, Sport and Exercise Medicine, has recently been awarded Sport Practitioner of the year in The Active Pregnancy Foundation Awards.
Dr Amal is a dedicated consultant with keen interest in female athlete & women’s health and has been recognised for her dedication, expertise and commitment to women’s health in sport.
Commenting on this achievement, Dr Amal Hassan shared:
“It is a real honour to receive this recognition for an area of my practice that I am so passionate about. While research that determines the benefits and special considerations regarding exercise in pregnancy (and during the postnatal period) has seen huge recent development, so has our confidence as clinicians in supporting all pregnant women to start, or to continue enjoying active pregnancies and remaining active following birth and hopefully, into their later life.
“From supporting pregnant professional athletes and those returning-to-sport directly, to providing education and disseminating updated evidence across the sports medicine and OBGYN professions, the mantra “Modify, don’t stop!” is hopefully gaining traction step-by-step.
“No matter what the medical concern in pregnancy, some physical activity is almost always better than nothing. With a myriad of benefits to both mum and baby, I truly believe continuing to support all pregnant and postnatal women to be active at levels that are sustainable and appropriate for them has huge benefits – whether they be related to health or to their psycho-social wellbeing, including career longevity in sport. It is amazing what pregnant athletes can continue doing if given adequate support to remain confident.
“Thanks to The Active Pregnancy Foundation for all they to do support pregnant and postnatal women, and the clinicians and practitioners supporting them.”
