Matthew Sala has been a Consultant Orthopaedic surgeon since his appointment at North West London Hospitals Trust in 1999. He is the Clinical Lead in Shoulder Surgery, having established the Upper Limb Unit for the North West London Hospitals Group. Mr Sala offers advice and support to other orthopaedic surgeons on the management of complex upper limb conditions & injuries.

Appointed Honorary Senior Lecturer at Imperial College School at Medicine in 2001. His work has helped pioneer minimally invasive, arthroscopic (keyhole) surgery in the upper limb and he performs more than 90% of all soft tissue repairs in this way. He is part of the international Steering Group for the development of the Equinoxe (Exactech) Total Shoulder Replacement Arthroplasty and Trauma range of implants and provides an international training facility for surgeons globally to attend for teaching. He is one of the few surgeons in this country with extensive experience using collagen patch augmentation grafts in rotator cuff repair surgery; and also has extensive experience using synthetic ligament reconstruction techniques in the treatment of acromioclavicular joint injuries.

Matthew studied medicine at the University of Liverpool Medical School. Already committed to a career in orthopaedic medicine, was appointed as Orthopaedic Registrar on the North Thames rotation including University College Hospital, London, and Hammersmith and Charing Cross Hospitals. He was awarded the qualification of FRCS, and then FRCS(Orth) in 1997; and the UK CCST in 1999.
Upon completion of this training he then obtained a prestigious clinical fellowship based at the University of Toronto and St Michaels Hospital, Toronto, Canada, in complex shoulder surgery and upper limb trauma. As part of this fellowship he travelled to the Upper Limb and Hand Unit, London, Ontario, the Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston and the Hospital for Special Surgery, New York City.
