Professional Biography

As a Specialist Sports and Musculoskeletal doctor, Dr Lorenzo Masci has undertaken extensive and vigorous specialist training. After finishing orthopaedic residency in Australia, he completed a four-year full time specialist training program with the Australasian College of Sports and Exercise Physicians. He moved to London in 2007 to work as a Specialist Sports and Musculoskeletal Doctor in the elite sports, NHS, military and private settings. He is on the Specialist GMC register for Sports and Exercise Medicine and is recognised by all private insurance companies.

As a Specialist doctor, Dr Masci has worked for various elite sporting institutions. He was the lead Sports Medicine Doctor for Wasps Rugby from 2011 to 2017. He formed an integral part of the Sports Medicine team at Fulham Football Club from 2008 to 2010. He was the lead Sports Medicine Doctor for Melbourne Storm Rugby League from 2005 to 2007. He was a part of the medical for Tennis Australia and the Australian Open from 2001 to 2007. In addition, he was the medical lead for the Aquatics centre at the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne in 2006.

At the Institute of Sport, Exercise and Health (ISEH), Dr Masci sees various overuse and trauma-induced sporting and musculoskeletal injuries. His sports interests include football, rugby, tennis and running/triathlon. He has specific expertise in diagnostic point-of-care ultrasound and ultrasound-guided injections including cortisone, hyaluronic acid and platelet-rich plasma. He has developed an on-line ultrasound-guided injection course and is recognised world-wide expert in ultrasound-guided interventions. He has a special interest in managing tendon disorders including Achilles, patellar (knee) tendon, heel spurs (plantar fasciopathy), hip and buttock tendons, tennis elbow, golfer’s elbow, and rotator cuff (shoulder) tendons.

He has developed the Tendon Clinic at the ISEH with Mr Chris Myers, a specialist physiotherapist also at the ISEH and clinical director of Complete Physio, and see patients with difficult to treat upper and lower limb tendon problems such as Achilles, patellar tendon, hip and pelvic tendons and shoulder tendons. He has developed a minimally invasive tendon scraping injection for chronic cases of Achilles and Patellar tendinopathy that have failed conservative management.

Research

Dr Masci is actively involved in research in the United Kingdom and internationally. He completed a Masters in Sports Medicine at the University of Melbourne on low back pain in young active athletes achieving a high distinction. He is currently involved in tendon research and is collaborating with reputable and distinguished institutions including Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital, Imperial College, Queen Mary University of London, Brunel University and FC Barcelona.

He has published 18 peer-reviewed papers on upper and lower limb tendinopathy and has spoken at multiple international conferences on tendinopathy including Achilles and knee tendinopathy. He is an honorary lecturer at Queen Mary University of London (QMUL).
