Senior Research Associate and Physiologist

Professional Biography

Dr Nathan Riding is a senior research associate and physiologist with a research focus on sports cardiology. He completed his PhD in 2014 with the aim of understanding the athlete’s heart and their implications on cardiac screening. From 2014 to 2021 he continued this area of research at Qatar’s Aspetar sports medicine hospital in a post-doctoral position, which screened nearly 2,000 athletes per year. This research was at the forefront of Aspetar’s accreditation as both an IOC and FIFA certified centre. He was also a member of the consensus panel that derived the international recommendations for ECG interpretation in athletes.

Since 2021, Nathan has been working as a senior research associate, using novel imaging techniques to assess cardiac function at rest and during exercise in healthy children and child athletes and how this may differ to that found in patients with congenital heart disease (CHD). This work involves a multi-national collaboration with Spain’s Barcelona FC, Aspire Academy in Qatar and Manchester United FC in the UK.

He is currently also a lecturer in sports medicine at University College London, leading the modules on exercise medicine and physical activity and health. In addition, he is working as a physiologist here at the Institute of Sport, Exercise and Health performing cardiopulmonary exercise testing and respiratory testing including Eucapnic Voluntary Hyperpnea (EVH).
