The Institute of Sport Exercise and Health's (ISEH) Dr Snehal Pinto Pereira and Senior Research Fellow at UCL Dr Rachael Frost are looking for participants who are approaching retirement age or have recently retired to understand their views or experiences of resistance training for a research study. Muscle weakness in older age can lead to falls, hospitalisation and loss of independence. The most successful way to prevent this is through resistance exercises (e.g, exercises using weights or your own body weight). Even though this form of training is very important, very few people participate in it.

For the study, the researchers are interested in hearing from people who are soon approaching retirement, those who are retiring now or people who have recently retired (in the last two years). They would like to hear a range of views and experiences; therefore they are looking for people who have and do not have experience of resistance training and you do not need to exercise regularly (or at all) to take part.

Participants will be required to attend one virtual focus group for 1-1.5 hours to share their experiences and views on resistance training. This will give the researchers insights into the most effective ways of promoting resistance training around the time of retirement.

As a thank you for taking part, a £20 Amazon or M&S voucher will be given to attendees after the focus group.

If you would like further information or would like to discuss the study, please contact either: Dr Snehal Pinto Pereira by emailing Snehal.pereira@ucl.ac.uk or Dr Rachael Frost by emailing Rachael.frost@ucl.ac.uk.
