Schalk Brits is a South African rugby player who has played for South Africa and is regarded by many as the finest hooker in world rugby. Brits was voted Players' Player of the year in the 2009/2010 season. In the 2010/2011 grand final against Leicester, Brits won the Man of the Match award. After a recent injury on the pitch, Schalk had been suffering from a pain that was not improving despite the best efforts of the medical team at Saracens. He was referred to the ISEH by Dr Adejuwon, lead team doctor of Saracens RFC and ISEH consultant.

Our ultra-high definition 3T MRI scanner helped to identify the underlying problem and direct the medical and conditioning team's management of the player. Brits has now returned to full fitness, and to first-team rugby with Saracens.

Our 3T MRI scanner can be 4 times faster and 2 times higher definition than a regular 1.5T MRI scanners, which makes a dramatic difference in the diagnosis of the patient as subtle abnormalities can be identified which might usually be missed. Additionally, the 3T scanner boasts a larger bore, making it ideal for larger patients, such as rugby players!

The ISEH also has a state-of-the-art physiotherapy suite available to aid rehabilitation. Used in combination with the expert knowledge of our physiotherapy team, this service helps patients recover quickly from injury.
