November marks Movember, a opportunity to highlight issues affecting men's health and wellbeing. This Movember, we spoke with  Dr Devan Thanki, ISEH Sports Medicine, Exercise and Health MSc student and London based doctor with an Interest in preventive medicine, physical activity and public health who talks about some of the concerns and issues, while sharing practical advice to help improve mood and boost mental health.

Dr Devan Thanki shares: "I have found that in my practice and experience with the public that there is a stigma with men and mental health. Many suffer from these issues and there are many factors that contribute - pressures from work, pressure to perform in a sport or from their personal life."

Movember is about to reducing this stigma and raising awareness.

Dr Thanki talks about the things we ourselves can do and also advise others to support mental health:

  •  Talk: Whether it’s with a family member, a friend, a colleague or your coach. They may have had a similar experience and can help you get through it or just be someone you can voice your thoughts to.
  •  Get help: It’s okay to have therapy! It’s a healthy way of processing your emotions with the help of someone who knows what they are talking about and everything is totally confidential.
  • Get active! Many studies have shown that exercise actually makes you happier. If you’re not someone that likes going to the gym, do something you enjoy that keeps you moving!
  • Sleep! Get enough of it; a good nights sleep can make the world of difference.
