This is the first full academic year that the Institute of Sport, Exercise and Health has hosted the renowned University College London Master’s programme in Sports Medicine, Exercise and Health. Sharing a floor with educators, researchers, scientists and clinicians facilitates collaboration and innovation, which lie at the heart of the ISEH’s ethos.

As fascinating as it was in previous years to explore various seminar rooms across the UCL campus, it’s been delightful to have a permanent home at the ISEH. The in-built audiovisual recording facilities allow our distance-learning students to view all discussions and demonstrations from the seminars. The physiology lab has been available for cardio-pulmonary exercise testing, calorimetry experiments, and strength and power practicals. The pressure plate treadmill with motion analysis, force plate mats and leg-presses in the physiotherapy lab have provided useful teaching aids.

We currently have 70 students enrolled on our programme, which includes campus-based and distance learners, full- and part- time students. Though the majority of the intake comprises doctors and physiotherapists our osteopaths, chiropractors and sports scientists from home and abroad contribute to our skill-mix and diversity.

The modular curriculum this term has included lower limb, spine, head and neck problems, exercise physiology, research methodology and statistics. Dozens of expert guest lecturers from elite sport and other universities have willingly supported our core teaching faculty of course tutors, ISEH clinicians and UCL scientists.

We are currently in the midst of marking coursework and research proposals. Research topics and settings are diverse, and this year cover a variety of musculoskeletal complaints including tendinopathy, osteoarthritis, frozen shoulder; novel exercise, injury prevention and rehabilitation programmes in diverse groups; various facets of physical activity; and elite sport medical problems, medication and supplements. Look out for the resulting publications and abstracts at conferences next year!
