Professional Biography

Dr Nigel Stephens MBBS, PhD, FRCP is a Consultant Cardiologist at the Institute of Sport, Exercise and Health (ISEH) and Honorary Consultant Cardiologist at The British Olympic Medical Centre. He holds significant positions in the NHS as Associate Medical Director and Director of Cardiology at Northwick Park Hospital, part of London Northwest Healthcare NHS Trust while practicing as a Consultant Cardiologist at the Trust and at Imperial Hospitals NHS Trust.

Dr Nigel Stephens’s postgraduate training was completed in Cardiology at Hammersmith Hospital at Papworth Hospital Cambridge after graduating in 1988 from Kings College Hospital and training in medicine – he also teaches medicine as a Lecturer at Cambridge University.

He established the coronary angioplasty service at Northwick Park Hospital in 2002 and is a renowned consultant in his field – having one of the largest UK procedure volumes in percutaneous mitral balloon valvuloplasty. He was instrumental in devising and providing sports cardiology services for athletes at the British Olympic Medical Institute. Additionally, he was among the very first physicians to detect frequent Atrial Fibrillation (AF) in master’s endurance athletes and right ventricular rhythm abnormalities. Dr Nigel Stephens is an elite athlete himself, being a Masters National Champion and World Championship medallist.
