The National Centre for Sport & Exercise Medicine (NCSEM-England) has appointed Dr Steve Harris as its first National Project Manager. The NCSEM was established with a £30m grant from the Department of Health as an Olympic Legacy project. Its founding members are the in London (ISEH), East Midlands and Sheffield.

Its aim is to apply world-class expertise to policies and practice that will benefit the health and well-being of the nation - from everyday people at risk of ill-health through to elite athletes.

Dr Harris will work with partners and stakeholders across the three regional hubs to bring the NCSEM together as a coherent body and ensure it meets its objectives. Close liaison between the regional hubs and Public Health England is a critical part of the role in developing and supporting the delivery of agreed governance arrangements for the NCSEM.

Dr Harris has a background in both academia and industry leading scientific research. His experience of building networks of collaborators and translating scientific discoveries into tangible outcomes will be vital in this new role.

“I am delighted to be taking on this new role”, said Dr Harris. “Sport, exercise and physical activity are incredibly valuable to society and their benefits cannot be over stressed. I am looking forward to working closely with the other project leads at the three centres in London (ISEH), the East Midlands and Sheffield to deliver the objectives of this challenging and exciting programme”.

Matt James Development Director for the ISEH congratulated Dr Harris on his appointment said "this is a critical role in bringing together a coherent strategy for the NCSEM partners and I look forward to working with Dr Harris".
