Every year the Arthritis Research UK Centre for Sport, Exercise and Osteoarthritis offers a summer internship scheme, giving students the opportunity to work alongside active researchers in sport, exercise and osteoarthritis research within the Arthritis Research UK Centre for Sport, Exercise and Osteoarthritis.

In July, the 2015 Internship programme induction event was hosted at the ISEH giving the group an insight into what to expect over the course of the summer. The cohort consisted of newly graduated health clinicians and health scientists, and medical students all linked by their interest in research in sport, exercise and osteoarthritis. Two of the interns will be based at the ISEH during the summer.

The Arthritis Research UK Centre for Sport, Exercise and Osteoarthritis was created in January 2013 with a £3 million grant from Arthritis Research UK.  It is led by Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust in collaboration with Arthritis Research UK and is a consortium of seven Universities: Nottingham, Oxford, Bath, Leeds, Loughborough, Southampton and University College London. The Centre is strengthened by several international collaborators, utilising expertise from around the world.

The key aims of the centre are:

  • To provide people with evidence-based advice and information about taking part in sports and exercise so they can reduce their risk of injury and development of osteoarthritis
  • To identify and train researchers in the field of sport and osteoarthritis research
  • To understand why some injuries can lead to osteoarthritis
  • To predict who will develop symptomatic osteoarthritis post-injury
  • To engage with key sporting bodies, patients and the public
