The Advanced BRAIN (BiomaRker, Advanced Imaging and Neurocognitive) Health Clinic is a dedicated service at the Institute of Sport Exercise and Health (ISEH) providing confidential specialist assessment and ongoing support not only to retired elite rugby players but now to Football players, as a new clinic has been launched.
We are delighted to share that the clinic has expanded its care and services to provide retired, elite, male and female football players, with a specialist, neurological service to monitor and access their brain health, supported by advanced imaging, neurocognitive assessment and blood measurements.
The new clinic expansion has been funded by the Football Association (FA), whom are in partnership with the Rugby Football Union (RFU) and Premiership Rugby to offer this specialist clinical service and associated research programme, to retired players, free of charge who have concerns about their brain health.
The neurological assessments at the Advanced BRAIN Health Clinic are overseen by two world-leading consultant neurologists from the ISEH and the Imperial College London (ICL), Dr Richard Sylvester and Professor David Sharp. Please note, the assessments undertaken at the Advanced BRAIN clinic are run independently and patient data is held confidentially by the ISEH and ICL.
The clinics are free and open to retired elite football players and rugby players between the ages of 30 and 55 who meet certain criteria.
Football players – eligibility:
Aged between 30 and 55 and either:

A male football player who held full time professional contracts for a minimum of three years in the English professional leagues

A female football player who played for a minimum of three years either in the current WSL or Women’s Championship, or the previous Division 1 or Division 1 North/South.
