Professional Biography


Professor James Hull is a Consultant Respiratory Physician at the Institute of Sport, Exercise and Health (ISEH). He completed his undergraduate training in both Exercise Physiology and Medicine at St George's Hospital Medical School in 2000. He then undertook and completed specialist training in General and Respiratory Medicine in London and in 2010 completed a PhD in Physiology.

Between 2011-12 he was a National Institute for Health Research Clinical Lecturer and spent time at the exercise centre in UCLA, Los Angeles. He has worked as a Consultant Respiratory Physician at the Royal Brompton Hospital since 2012.

His areas of expertise include chronic cough, persistent throat symptoms (e.g. discomfort and closure), unexplained shortness of breath and asthma.

His main clinical and research focus however, centres on exercise-related respiratory problems. This includes work evaluating and helping athletic individuals (of all abilities) with unexplained breathlessness, wheeze and/or cough. He continues to work with several elite and professional sporting organisations to help athletes overcome their respiratory problems and is currently working with the International Olympic Committee and the English Institute of Sport, as a respiratory expert. He has recently co-authored a textbook; Complete Guide to Respiratory care in Athletes (Routledge).
