Alastair Cook, England cricket captain, has made a return from a groin injury to become one of England's most successful one-day captain as his unpredictable team were transformed from Sunday’s performance to take a 2-1 series lead against Sri Lanka.

Cook sat out the second match of the series at Chester-le-Street last Sunday after reporting tightness in his right groin. In his absence under stand-in captain Eoin Morgan, England produced a miserable performance as they were bowled out for 99 on the way to a 157-run defeat. Cook admitted to watching the defeat of his team as 'not pretty.'

After a lengthy net session and some aerobic work to test his tight groin on Tuesday, Cook decided that he was ready to retake the reins from Eoin Morgan and is said to be determined to show Sri Lanka his ruthless side after Sunday’s blip. Cook has previously been criticised in the winter for being too much of a tame leader but he is now determined to show off his new found 'tough streak' - as you might expect from somebody who has scored almost 11,000 international runs.
