Dr Bhavesh Kumar is Principal Clinical Teaching Fellow at the Institute of Sport Exercise and Health, UCL and Honorary Consultant in Sport & Exercise Medicine at UCLH. He graduated in Medicine from Imperial College London in 2004. His early post-graduate training was in Surgery and then General Practice, during which time he successfully achieved the honour of Membership of both the Royal College of Surgeons and Royal College of General Practitioners. He chose to specialise in Sport & Exercise Medicine and was awarded a position on the coveted London Deanery specialty training program. Bhavesh has acquired considerable experience managing a broad range of elite and amateur athletes through posts at the Olympic Medical Institute, the English Institute of Sport, the Defence Medical Rehabilitation Centre Headley Court, and during a six-month fellowship at Aspetar Orthopaedic and Sports Medicine Hospital in Qatar. He was awarded a British Association of Sport & Exercise Medicine Fellowship that took him to Centres of Excellence at the University of Toronto and McMaster University in Canada, and at Harvard in the USA to study Sport & Exercise Medicine for children and adolescents.
Bhavesh is a Consultant in Sport & Exercise Medicine at the Institute of Sport, Exercise & Health (ISEH), University College Hospital London, as well as at the Central London Community Healthcare NHS Trust. At the ISEH, he leads the National Tendinopathy Centre clinical and research pathways. He is a keen advocate of using musculoskeletal ultrasonography within clinic to facilitate early accurate diagnosis and injection therapy when necessary to promote effective rehabilitation.
His academic work also includes co-leading the University College London (UCL) Sports Medicine Exercise & Health Masters program based at the ISEH. He is Patron of the UCL Undergraduate Sports & Exercise Medicine Society. His current research interests also include Prolotherapy for certain orthopaedic complaints, and antibiotic and injection therapies for back pain.
Bhavesh is currently team physician to West Ham United, AFC Wimbledon, and the England Football Association men’s deaf squad. He works as a Consultant to British Athletics during camps and competitions at home and abroad, as well The European Tour Golf and Saracens rugby academy. He was a Medical Officer for athletics and endurance events, including marathons, road cycling, triathlons and race walks, at the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, and with England Athletics at the 2014 Commonwealth Games.
